What is Neurophysiotherapy?
Neurophysiotherapy is a specialism within physiotherapy that focuses on the treatment of movement disorders caused by damage to, or disease of the brain or spinal cord.
After a stroke, the ability to move one side of the body can be adversely affected making it hard to sit, stand, balance or walk.
In Parkinson’s disease tremor, slowness of movement and muscle stiffness can all affect the ability to move.
In the elderly population, balance, falls and deconditioning can have a negative impact on quality of life.
Neurophysiotherapists are trained to help with these difficulties.
A Bit About Me
I have been a physiotherapist for 25 years and specialised in neurological rehabilitation for over 20 years. I spent 16 years as the Lead Physiotherapist at Frenchay Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre in Bristol, one of the largest brain injury centres in the UK, where I was responsible for the physiotherapy treatment of inpatients who had suffered a life changing event due to a traumatic brain injury, stroke or other neurological condition.
I am passionate about helping clients achieve their physical potential through rehabilitation, based not just on the most up-to-date research, but also on how rehabilitation can be adapted to home and community life. One of my career highlights was helping a client achieve their goal of walking barefoot on sand and into the sea on their local beach!
I am fascinated by everything about the brain - how it works, what happens when things go wrong and how as a physiotherapist I can use my skills to promote physical recovery.
Treatment Philosophy
The relationship I have with clients is key to building trust and making our sessions enjoyable. Rehabilitation can be hard work at times and for some, you may be coming to exercise for the first time. I do my best to bring fun and laughter into our sessions.
